It all began in the days Rotem was a partner in a gallery of African design objects. One time she was visiting in a fancy hotel in Jerusalem - which bought design objects from her store. She was coming up the stairs and there it was: an astonishing quilt carpet hanging on the wall. She was overwhelmed by its genuine colors and by its smell. It was a carpet made of a Persian traditional technique - cheltika - which means sewing 40 different parts of carpets. In Persian 40 = chel piece = tika.

הכל התחיל בימים בהם רותם היתה שותפה ב"אומה" גלריה לחפצי עיצוב אפריקאיים. יום אחד בעת ביקורה במלון ירושלמי מפואר - שקנה חפצי עיצוב מהחנות שלה, עת שעלתה מהלובי הראשי לקומה השניה, היא הבחינה בו. שטיח טלאים שתלוי היה על הקיר הכה אותה בתדהמה. היא התרגשה מהאוטנטיות של הצבעים ומריחם. מדובר בשטיח העשוי עבודת יד מסורתית פרסית, בטכניקה שנקראת צ'לטיקה שמשעותה חיבור 40 חתיכות של שטיחים שונים. בפרסית צ'ל =40 טיקה = חתיכות.

After this strong experience Rotem found herself working at the heart of the flee market in Jaffa, among Manzur the Persian, Jania the Georgian and Tomas the Eritrean. Manzur owns the carpet-shop. He has eyes like a hawk and a great knowledge about carpets, which he got from his ancestors. The legend tells that he once saw someone carrying a carpet on the streets of the market, and he just stopped him and payed him as much as he wanted because he recognized the carpet. It was the carpet he once sold to his client. Immediately when he phoned her to clarify the mystery, she approved his concern and told him the carpet was stolen from her house, a few days earlier.

אחרי החוויה החזקה הזו רותם מצאה עצמה בלב שוק הפשפשים ביפו, בין מנצור הפרסי, ז'ניה הגרוזינית ותומס הארתיראי. מנצור הוא בעל החנות. ומלבד היותו בר סמכא בענייני שטיחים - ידע אשר קיבל מאבות אבותיו, הוא גם בעל עיני נץ. האגדה מספרת שיום אחד צד את עיניו, אדם המסתובב עם שטיח על כתפיו ברחובות השוק. הוא הוריד ממנו את השטיח ושילם לו במקום את המבוקש. הוא זיהה את השטיח, זה היה שטיח שהוא מכר בעבר ללקוחה שלו. מיד אחרי שהוא התקשר אליה לברר את התעלומה - היא אישרה שאכן היתה אצלה פריצה כמה ימים מוקדם יותר והשטיח אכן נגנב.

Rotem says it's amazing that although the 4 of them come from different cultural backgrounds and speak 4 different languages, they all understand each other without words.

Now days that the fashion industry (and the carpet industry as well), trying to imitate this authenticity of old colors by using toxic chemicals which poisoning our body and our rivers, upcycling old carpets by restoring them is definitely the right thing to do.
As a person who looks constantly for authenticity in all aspects of life I definitely appreciate a carpet which is carrying an emotional value and the care of craft.
