Re-bike

I have met Tal Mor and Tom Bendkovski at the Ecomania - an alternative sustainable event. Their lamps were shining at me from the end of the room. Maybe it was the their vital young energy, or the familiar feeling of something you recognize but you take a second to remember from where.

RE BIKE lamps are made from useless bike's chassis. Those two designers seems to be from the BMX generation. Loving those branded iron pipes, with the need to create a functional objects, led them to make this series of lamps, and by that, giving the honorable chassis a new life - a second chance with a new interpretation.

Li-Ron's desire for tires swings is probably a combination of her art studies in Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, and her former job as an instructor in summer camps in the states, where tires swings are very common. It has taken her more than 10 years till she decided to do it by herself and 12 tires more, (trials) until she came up with her first model of a horse swing. Like a good old wine the waiting was worthy. She managed to cut the material in a perfect and virtuosic way that reuses 90% of the tire (and 100% in the case of the deer's model)

It's a hard work to cut tires, you can start with a Stanley knife but eventually you will need also a disc and a saw. Li-Ron likes it. She likes the hard hands work, and she also does the handy work at home as well. She speaks about tool box like a girl speaks about a barbie house, and her spouse is really enjoying his handy woman and bragging this fact to all of his friends.

The land of milk and reclaimed wood

Designer Joy Van Erven has just ended a nice and long period of creation in Tel-Aviv and went back to his homeland - Netherlands. 8 years ago, He came to Israel with his Israeli girlfriend. They lived in Tel- Aviv's south neighborhood - Florentin. He had his own Pub, (he built and designed it by himself), and there, he met his future partner, Designer Finn Ahlgren. They both fell in love with the abundance of reclaimed wood founded in the neighborhood's streets, and started to create from it under the brand Godspeed.

המעצב ג'וי ואן ארבן בדיוק סיים תקופה ארוכה ונעימה בתל אביב וחזר למולדתו - הולנד. לפני 8 שנים הוא הגיע לכאן עם חברתו הישראלית. פתח פאב (בנה ועיצב את המקום בעצמו), ושם, על הבר הכיר את שותפו לעתיד, המעצב השוודי פין אלגרן. שניהם התאהבו בשפע הפסולת הנמצאת ברחובות פלורנטין והתחילו לצור ממנה תחת המותג גודספיד.

In Europe, people are less likely to throw old things to the street and the recycled rules are very strict and clear, where as here in Israel, things are more loose and easy going. That's the reason it is most likely to find here treasures in the streets - the kind you would pay quite a lot of money in Europe. This easy going vibes, in addition with non official and personal communication between people, had its effect on the two designers. They started to upcycle the reclaimed wood to Avant-garde eclectic furniture. The local work tools have also effected their work, where as in Europe they left organized and accessorized studios, here they had to settle for less, and to improvise the rest. It is very interesting to see the connection between Godspeed's design language and the local Improvisation culture they have created in. They have been invited to other places in the world as well (Asia and Europe) and in each place they used the local street's waste and the local work tools.

באירופה פחות נהוג לזרוק כך סתם רהיטים לרחוב (אל תהיו סקפטיים), מה גם שהחוקים לגבי מיחזור מאוד נוקשים וברורים, בעוד שכאן בארץ הדברים יותר משוחררים ופחות מוגדרים בנושא. זו הסיבה שניתן בקלות רבה למצוא אוצרות רחוב, מהסוג שבאירופה יעלו לא מעט. אוירת ה"סבבה", בנוסף לתקשורת החמה והלא רשמית בין אנשים, השפיעה על שני המעצבים. הם התחילו למחדש שאריות עץ לרהיטים אואנגרדים ואקלקטיים. כלי העבודה המקומיים גם הם השפיעו על עבודתם, בעוד שבאירופה עזבו סטודיו מאורגן ומאובזר, כאן היו צריכים להסתפק במועט. וכך, במהירות רבה, נדלקו על אזיקונים ואימצו באהבה את תרבות האילתורים. הם מוזמנים למקומות שונים בעולם (אירופה ואסיה) ובכל מקום הם יוצרים מפסולת הרחוב המקומית ומכלי העבודה המקומיים.

To their creative process they call "Life Sketching". They know where they start, and they know it's going to be a chair, but all the rest is a pure Improvisation. Joy had studied visual arts and Finn had studied furniture design. The combination of Joy's sculpture qualities together with Finn's craftsman's abilities created furniture with a unique design language and impressive appearance. The handicraft of the assembly line

Industrial Designer Shir Atar grew up in the north of Israel - on the bank of the sea of Galilee. His grandmother who lived in a kibbutz (Kinneret) used to make all kind of handicraft as a way of living, and her house was usually full of the warm vibes of them: a chair, a sculpture a flowerpot in the garden… and Shir inherited her handicraft talent. The "working with your hands" was accompanying him along all his life, only he took the special energy of a craft product, to the challenging industrial design rout.

After finishing the Industrial Design department at the H.I.T, he decided he would have loved to design in an assembly line mode, but in a way it will be clever: finding new uses for the traditional technologies, thinking thin (in space's terms) and keeping the 'one of a kind' look-n-feel as well. He found an Israeli recycle textile factory, and after he got their warm blessing, he started to observe the machines, the human assets and the factory's waste. Eventually he upcycled it! He changed the function of the machines and reused the factory's textile waste: the strings. Actually it was more of left overs of strings which usually exchanged colors at their end. That's the reason they were wrong for the traditional industry, anyway, for the upcycle scene they were a treasure. Now the machines worked the other way around and made lovely cushion seats, who came from an assembly line, but if you check them closely, you can attached differently and emotionally to each and every one of them.

אחרי שסיים את לימודיו במכון הטכנולוגי בחולון במסלול העיצוב התעשייתי, החליט שהיה מתאים לו לפנות לעיצוב על קו ייצור, אך באופן חכם: למצוא שימוש חדש לטכנולוגיות מסורתיות, לחשוב רזה (במונחים של מקום) ואף, לשמור על האיכויות של מוצר יחיד ומיוחד. הוא פנה למפעל מיחזור טקסטיל ישראלי ולאחר שקיבלו אותו בזרועות פתוחות הוא החל בתצפיות. הוא צפה במכונות, בהון האנושי ובפסולת התעשיתית של המפעל. לבסוף הוא מיחדש את זה! הוא שינה את תפקוד המכונות ועשה שימוש חוזר בפסולת המפעל - החוטים. למעשה, זה היה יותר בכיוון של שאריות של חוטים שבדרך כלל בסופם היו מחליפים צבעים. זו הסיבה שהם היו פסולים לתעשייה המסורתית. בכל מקרה לסצנת המיחדוש הם היו אוצר. עכשיו שהמכונות עבדו בכיוון ההפוך, נוצרו יופי של מושבים רכים (פופים) שיצאו מפס ייצור, אך משהתקרבת אליהם יכולת לראות את השוני ובכך, להקשר באופן רגשי ושונה לכל אחד ואחד מהמושבים.

Another upcyling adventure had waited for Shir in the back yard of his workshop - A bunch of branches. It's only natural he joined them with an Eco resin cast. The fossil-look outcome, is combining once again Shir's winning ingredients, form with handicraft, a set of vases that each and every one of them has a unique look which cannot be duplicated.

The fascinating frequency: 7.83 Hertz

My meeting with the designer Ofer Shahar lasted 2 hours. Along this time I have met 8 new people who came by (friends, neighbors, clients, colleagues - each one had at least two rolls of the list). It took me 5 minutes to dive into a deep conversation with him. After 30 minutes he already told me the next thing: .7.83 Hertz is the frequency of our brain and it is the frequency of earth as well. That's probably the reason we feel so connected to ourselves walking in nature. He learnt this while exploring the effects of technology on environment, at the last 8 years. Numbers or facts - I was already fascinated.

הפגישה שלי עם המעצב עופר שחר ארכה שעתיים. בזמן הזה הכרתי 8 אנשים חדשים שעברו בסביבה (תערובת של חברים, קולגות, לקוחות שכנים - לכל אחד היו לפחות שני תפקידים מהרשימה) לקח לי 5 דקות בלבד לצלול לשיחה עמוקה איתו. אחרי 30 דקות הוא סיפר לי את הדבר הבא: 7.83 הרץ זה התדר של המוח שלנו וזה גם התדר של כדור הארץ (!) זו הסיבה כנראה, שכשאנחנו יוצאים לטבע אנחנו מרגישים מחוברים לעצמינו. הוא למד זאת במהלך 8 השנים האחרונות בעודו חוקר את השפעות הטכנולוגיה על הסביבה. מספרים או עובדות - אני הייתי כבר מרותקת

The workshop

Shahar is fulfilling the Holy Trinity: Design - Community - Environment. He designs in his workshop some beautiful objects made from upcycled old and neglected stuff. He is a partner in the "Bloom field" Gallery (together with Itai Cohen, Gilad Shahar - his brother and a gifted carpenter, and Efrat Shahar - his sister). He built a garden with an irrigation system, that reuses the water, in one of the city's lots. And, he responsible for quit a few jam sessions in the neighborhood including good vibes and a lovely hospitality.

שחר מקיים את השילוש הקדוש של עיצוב - קהילה - סביבה. הוא מעצב בסדנה שלו אובייקים ורהיטים יפיפיים, העשויים ממיחדוש של חפצים ישנים ועזובים. הוא שותף בגלרית בלומפילד (יחד עם איתי כהן, גלעד שחר - אח שלו ונגר מוכשר, ואפרת שחר - אחותו), הוא הקים גינה עם מערכת השקיה שעושה שימוש חוזר במים בפרוייקט ה"חווה", ואחראי על לא מעט ג'ם סשינים שכונתיים הכוללים אנרגיות טובות ואירוח מקסים.

To my question how does he connect between the inevitable technology and preserving the quality of environment (it is an inevitable question watching his dinosaur mobile), Shahar answers that he practices all kind of messages which are scattered around him, in his gallery, his loft and his workshop. The signs are made from wood's left overs.

לשאלתי כיצד הוא מגשר בין הטכנולוגיה הבלתי נמנעת בחיינו לבין שימור איכויות הסביבה. (שאלה בלתי נמנעת כשמתבוננים בטלפון הדינוזאורי שלו), שחר עונה לי שהוא מתרגל מסרים אשר כתובים על שלטים הפזורים בשגרת יומו. ביציאה מהבית, בסדנה וכמובן בגלריה. השלטים עשויים משאריות עץ.

What is it that makes me happy?

Shahar started his career as a drummer. He played many Jam sessions in Universities in the USA on the behalf of the Israel's Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Coming back to Israel he organized his new loft and when friends, that were devastating from the result, asked him to help them, he did. At the beginning he was confused and became the real estate agent of the neighborhood. Than he understood that his upcycled furniture, which were regularly found at his lofts - were what they were looking for.

שחר התחיל את הקריירה שלו כמתופף - הוא ניגן בג'ם סשנים באוניברסיטאות בארה"ב בשם משרד החוץ. כשחזר לארץ שיפץ וסידר את הלופט שלו. כשהחברים שלו היו מרותקים מהתוצאה וביקשו שיעזור להם לעשות גם כזה. הוא עזר. בהתחלה הוא היה המתווך של השכונה (חשב שכך יעזור להם למצוא לופטים שווים), אבל אח"כ הבין שהם בעצם חיפשו את העיצובים שלו, שהיו דרך קבע בכל מקום שגר.

At the end of my visit I found my self walking with Shahar and another friend (but of course) to have lunch. Only after getting my order I remembered I had already made my lunch appointment with somebody else, someplace else… That's what happens when I'm fascinated.

בסוף הביקור שלי מצאתי את עצמי צועדת עם שחר ועם חבר נוסף (ברור) לכיוון הצהריים - לנגב חומוס. אחרי שהזמנתי והתרווחתי בנחת בכסא, נזכרתי שקבעתי צהריים עם מישהו אחר בקצה השני של העיר. מה שנקרא - מרותקת!
