When I have met Designer Itay Noy I couldn't help but notice his serious philosophic look, very suitable for a man who makes time pieces (watches from the type you could dream on)... The researching attitude in his work, and the profound answers he gives, are a perfect match to his serious look. He designs high quality watches in limited editions. His awards-winning work has been shown in exhibitions and museums all over the globe, and the latest one is Basel World 2013.

כשפגשתי את המעצב איתי נוי לא יכולתי שלא להבחין בחזות הפילוסופית שלו, אשר הולמת אדם המכין פיסות זמן (שעונים מהסוג שאפשר רק לחלום עליהם)... גישת המחקר בעבודה שלו, והתשובות עמוקות הרבדים שהוא נותן משלימות את הלוק הרציני שלו. איתי מעצב שעונים איכותיים בסדרות מוגבלות. עבודותיו עטורות הפרסים, הוצגו בתערוכות ובמוזיאונים נחשבים בעולם והאחרונה שבהן הינה תערוכת

Noy always knew, that he wants to design watches (in retrospect he discovered that he was a scion for a watches makers family). In his master's degree in Design Academy Eindhoven he researched the motive of time threw observing old objects. For example: He took a chair and revealed his covered layers and polished the wood, letting the material to tell the time's stories. He took some old cutlery, founded in the flee market, and polish them to their bones, until the insight was shinning, like he says: "The more you reveal the past, the more it looks new"! There are many thoughts rising while revealing old objects, like: Why are we throwing away old things? Why do we love vintage objects (very old things) and hate 10-years-old objects? What is the core of connection between the man and the object? Is it emotional? What have happened, after the mass production revolution, to that connection?

נוי תמיד ידע שהוא רוצה לעצב שעונים, (בדיעבד התברר שהוא נצר למשפחת עושי שעונים). את התואר השני שלו עשה באינדהובן, שם חקר את נושא הזמן דרך התבוננות בחפצים ישנים. למשל: הוא לקח כסא וחשף את שכבות הריפוד והעץ שלו, נותן לחומר לספר את סיפור הזמן. הוא לקח מזלג כסף שקנה בשוק הפשפשים, ושייף אותו עד לעצמותיו, עד אשר התובנה הבריקה ממנו. כפי שהוא אומר: "ככל שאתה חושף יותר את העבר, כך החפץ נראה חדש יותר". יש עוד הרבה מחשבות שעולות בזמן שחושפים ומגלים חפצים ישנים, כמו: למה אנחנו זורקים חפצים ישנים? למה אנחנו אוהבים חפצי וינטג' (שהם מאוד ישנים) ושונאים חפצים בני עשור? מהי ליבת הקשר בין האדם והחפץ? האם  הקשר הוא רגשי? ומה קרה לקשר הזה אחרי מהפיכת הייצור ההמוני?

This inquiry led him to the "Second time watch" project - upcycling old watches to new timepieces. In this project, he photographed the old watch, afterwards, he disassembled its old parts, put new mechanism, and placed the picture of the old watch with its time of death, in the back, behind the new hands which show the right time. He describes it: "The old watch is imprisoned within the renewed watch" And than… a powerful image has been created, connecting between the past and the present and between the old and the new.

המחקר הזה הוביל אותו לפרוייקט: שעוני הפעם השניה - מיחדוש שעונים ישנים לפיסות זמן חדשות. בפרוייקט הזה הוא צילם שעונים ישנים, אח"כ, פירק את החלקים הישנים שלהם, שם מנגנונים חדשים ומיקם את תמונת השעון הישן עם שעת המוות שלו ברקע, מאחורי המחוגים החדשים שמראים את השעה הנכונה. כמו שהוא מתאר זאת: "השעון הישן כלוא בתוך שעון חדש". ואז… נוצר דימוי חזק המחבר בין העבר להווה ובין הישן לחדש.

The tea party girl

As I walked into her apartment I felt like Alice from wonderland getting ready for the tea party. The place was full of plates, cups and pots - perfect for tea time. Inbar Haiman, was apologizing for the mass. She said she is getting ready for a fair which will take place the next month. Her apartment has been functioning more like a studio before a big presentation. Everything is out in the open, on the shelves, on the table, on the floor. I could feel her excitement in the air.

כשנכנסתי לתוך הדירה שלה, הרגשתי כמו אליס מארץ הפלאות, מתכוננת למסיבת התה. הדירה היתה מלאה בכוסות, צלחות וקומקומים - מושלמים לשעת התה. ענבר היימן, התנצלה על הבלאגן. היא אמרה שהיא מתכוננת ליריד בו היא משתתפת בחודש הבא. הדירה שלה מתפקדת יותר כמו סטודיו לפני פרזנטציה גדולה. הכל פתוח וגלוי, במדפים, על השולחן ועל הרצפה. יכולתי להרגיש את הההתרגשות שלה באויר.

Inbar grew up in Eilat - a very touristic city in Israel, where she spent her nights in the city's clubs (working and having fun - a party girl, did I say)? When she was 27 years old she landed in Tel Aviv, studied gold crafting and designed gold rings. But after a while she decided to quit because the gold was too expensive and she didn't satisfied for less than that. She even reused gold from her client's old jewelry, unfortunately, it was not enough. So there she was at home, drinking her tea, watching her "3 tier cake plate" and than it hit her: why can't she make it from different kind of plates (not the common set) and to add a cup of tea at the top? After she upload her first upcycled design on the Facebook, she got 10 requests on the spot. The tea party girl has a 9 years old boy. He has good taste, a good eye and lots of emotional intelligence. The moment he saw her first model, he asked if she has enough poles because she'll need it. He was right!

ענבר גדלה באילת, שם בילתה את לילותיה במועדוני העיר (עובדת ומבלה - אוהבת לעשות חיים הילדה הזו:-). בגיל 27 נחתה בתל אביב, הלכה ללמוד צורפות, ולאחר מכן עיצבה טבעות זהב. אך, לאחר זמן מה החליטה להפסיק מהסיבה שהזהב היה מאוד יקר והיא לא הסתפקה בפחות מזה לתכשיטיה. היא עשתה שימוש חוזר בזהב של תכשיטים ישנים של לקוחותיה, למרבה הצער זה לא הספיק. היא מצאה עצמה בבית, שותה תה, מסתכלת על מעמד העוגיות שלה וחושבת… למה  היא לא יכולה בעצם להכין מעמד כזה שיהיה מסוגים שונים של צלחות (ולא מסט אחיד) ובראש לשים כוס תה? אחרי שהעלתה את העיצוב הממחדש הראשון שלה לפייסבוק היא קיבלה עשר הזמנות על המקום. לילדת מסיבות התה יש ילד בן 9. יש לו טעם טוב, עין טובה ותבונה רגשית רבה. ברגע שראה את הדגם הראשון שלה שאל האם יש לה מספיק מוטות כי היא תצטרך אותם. הוא צדק!

Inbar loves getting around in flee markets, loves to rummage, and to hunt treasures. When she comes back home full of bags she looks some of the special objects in the web, and it happens here and there that she came up with something really precious. She mostly upcycles original old vintage things. Rarely she buys new plates and it's only because she needs some pink or blue for the color composition (and it's hard to find vintage plates in those colors).

ענבר אוהבת את הסיבובים בשוק הפשפשים, אוהבת לנבור ולצוד מציאות. כשהיא מגיעה לביתה עמוסת חבילות, היא בודקת כמה מהפריטים המיוחדים ברשת. זה קורה פה ושם שהיא עלתה על איזה פריט יקר ערך במיוחד. היא ממחדשת בעיקר חפצים ישנים אורגינליים. רק לעיתים רחוקות יוצא שהיא קונה צלחות חדשות וגם זה רק כוון שהיא זקוקה לצלחות ורודות או כחולות להשלמת הקומפוזיציה הצבעונית שלה (קשה למצוא צלחות ישנות בצבעים הללו)

Inbar is not the girl to sit and make cakes stand for the rest of her life, so she challenged herself and added some light to the adorable vintage kitchenware objects. Her upcycled lamps once again achieved virtual applause from the crowd. Here are some of her upcycled results:

The green leadership plan

This post I allow myself to take a break from the usual designer - upcycle object story, in order to tell you about a small but very important conference I was invited to, last Thursday - The green leadership conference. The green leadership plan is a cooperation between the Authority of Environmental Quality, and the Department of Elementary Education of Tel Aviv - Jaffa's municipality, which encourages a group of pupils from 49 elementary schools in the city, (3-4 pupils from each school),  to learn more about environment, to take personal responsibility and thus influence others behavior. For example a few years ago, dealing with the recycle theme, few pupils succeed bringing the recycling paper garbage cans to their neighborhood, before it was common all over the city.

בפוסט הזה אני מרשה לעצמי לשבור את הסיפור הרגיל של מעצב - אובייקט ממוחדש, כדי לספר לכם על כנס קטן אבל חשוב - כנס מובילות ירוקה. תכנית "מובילות ירוקה" הינה שיתוף פעולה בין הרשות לאיכות הסביבה ובין מחלקת החינוך היסודי בעירית תל אביב, אשר לוקח קבוצת תלמידים מ-49 בתי ספר בעיר (3-4 תלמידים מכל בית ספר), ומעודד אותם ללמוד יותר על הסביבה, לקחת אחריות אישית ועל ידי כך להשפיע על התנהגות של אחרים. לדוגמא לפני כמה שנים, כשהם התעסקו עם נושא המיחזור, קבוצת תלמידים הצליחה להביא את פח המיחזור של הנירות לשכונה שלהם, לפני שפוזרו הפחים הכחולים בכל העיר 

This year, the conference's theme was efficient energy use. It took place in Einav Center for Culture. The pupils were taken very seriously by the organizers, yet at their eye level. I really was impressed by the cool presentation (of Nadav Gofer and Noa Gogel - from Zaad Yarok) which reviewed with graphs, the results of the pupil's last activity of saving electricity in schools. They prepared a cute animation movie as well, about the connection between saving electricity and saving earth, and for desert the pupils went to the municipality building, to meet the workers and to explain them the significant importance of saving electricity. (Yes! they went to the mayor as well - thank god, now he knows:-)! Above all I liked the "wow" reaction of the young crowd to the animation that explained how can 3-4 pupils influence the behavior of half of the population of Israel.

השנה, נושא הכנס היה התיעלות אנרגטית, והוא נערך במרכז עינב לתרבות. המארגנים לקחו את התלמידים ברצינות, אך יחד עם זאת בגובה העיניים. מאוד התרשמתי מהפרזנטציה המגניבה (שהועברה על ידי נדב גופר ונועה גוגל מחברת צעד ירוק), אשר הציגה גרפים עם תוצאות הפעילות האחרונה של התלמידים בנושא חיסכון בחשמל בבתי הספר. בנוסף, הם הכינו סרטון אנימציה חמוד המסביר את הקשר בין חיסכון בחשמל ובין הצלת כדור הארץ. לקינוח, התלמידים עלו לבנין העיריה והסבירו לעובדים את המשמעות החשובה בחיסכון בחשמל. (כן! הם גם ביקרו את ראש העיר. מעולה! - עכשיו הוא יודע:-) יותר מכל אהבתי את תגובת ה"וווואוו" של הקהל הצעיר לאנימציה שהסבירה איך 3-4 תלמידים יכולים להשפיע על התנהגות של חצי מאוכלוסית המדינה

Important part of the conference was Moshe Amar's installation. Amar is an artist and for years, he was the coordinator of the visual and digital arts department, of Tel-Aviv's arts school. As an artists and as a teacher he believes that all aspects of life are tied together, there are no limits between creation, education and environment. The pupils of the conference, were asked in advanced to bring old toys, they placed them on a round cloth in order to create a site specific, gathering around carrying letters with the massage: "Leading to a green world". In the end of the conference they donated the toys to other children.

חלק חשוב של הכנס היה המיצב של משה עמר. עמר הינו אמן והיה במשך שנים המרכז של מגמת אמנות חזותית ודיגיטלית בבית הספר לאומנויות בעיר. כאמן וכמורה הוא מאמין שכל האספקטים של החיים קשורים זה בזה, אין גבולות בין יצירה, חינוך וסביבה. התלמידים נתבקשו להביא מראש צעצועים ישנים, מיקמו אותם על בד עגול ולאחר מכן התאספו והצטלמו כשהם מחזיקים אותיות עם המסר: "מובילים לעולם ירוק" בסוף הכנס הם תרמו את הצעצועים לילדים אחרים.

The revelation of the tin man

This is a story about a big change in life, about letting an old flame finally come out. Since Ronen Wasserman - The Tinman was young he had a strong passion for motorcycles and cars; driving them in the field and fixing them as a hobby in his back yard workshop. He did it in addition to his career in a hi-tech firm. One thing went to another and Wasserman has finally made it official - upcycling old tin parts of cars to furniture, became from a hobby to a full time job.

הפעם זה סיפור על שינוי גדול בחיים, על מימושה של אהבה ישנה. מאז שהיה נער היתה לרונן וסרמן - אישפח משיכה עזה לרכבי שטח ואופנועים. הוא היה נוהג בהם בשטח ומתקן אותם בסדנת החצר האחורית של ביתו. הוא עשה זאת במקביל לקריירה ארוכה בחברת הייטק. מפה לשם וסרמן סוף סוף עשה זאת באופן רשמי - מיחדוש פח של מכוניות ישנות לפרטי ריהוט - הפך מתחביב לעיצוב במשרה מלאה

Wasserman is coming from a Russian family of engineers, and the transformation from technique harsh thinking methods, to design abstract thinking methods, is starting to happen. The inflaming discovery of this fact is sort of revelation for him.

וסרמן מגיע ממשפחה רוסית של מהנדסים. המעבר משיטות חשיבה נוקשות של טכניקה לשיטות חשיבה מופשטות של עיצוב מתחיל לקרות לו, והגילוי המסעיר הזה הוא סוג של התגלות עבורו

He collects useless and old cars (like BMW, Lexus and his favorite are the italians; Alfa and Lancia). He buys old parts of cars from a chop shop (6$ for kilo of tin), or from the car industry's people that already know him.

הוא אוסף מכוניות חסרות שימוש וישנות (כמו במוו, לקסוס והאהובות עליו הן האיטלקיות אלפא ולנצ'יה). הוא קונה חלקי מכוניות ממשחטה (25 ש"ח לקילו פח), ומאנשי תעשית הרכב שכבר מכירים אותו.

Working in Intel as an engineer at the vacuum department, he had to read and write a lot of manuals. For his opinion: you are sort of handicapped having an innovative DVD and knowing only two commands to operate it.

כשעבד באינטל כהנדסאי ראשי במחלקת הואקום שלהם, היה עליו לקרוא ולכתוב הרבה מאוד מדריכי הפעלה. לדעתו זה סוג של מוגבלות לקנות די.וי.די חדיש ומתוחכם ולתפעל אותו רק עם שתי פקודות בסיסיות.

Wasserman never went along with the system (and until my kid will be 15, dropping out of high school still looks very romantic to me). So it is not surprising that autodidact like him learned everything he knows about body work and painting cars from the web. He spent nights reading manuals of English tinsmith and watching American "how to do it" films about painting cars.
