The handicraft of the assembly line

Industrial Designer Shir Atar grew up in the north of Israel - on the bank of the sea of Galilee. His grandmother who lived in a kibbutz (Kinneret) used to make all kind of handicraft as a way of living, and her house was usually full of the warm vibes of them: a chair, a sculpture a flowerpot in the garden… and Shir inherited her handicraft talent. The "working with your hands" was accompanying him along all his life, only he took the special energy of a craft product, to the challenging industrial design rout.

One of a kind cushion seat straight from the assembly line

After finishing the Industrial Design department at the H.I.T, he decided he would have loved to design in an assembly line mode, but in a way it will be clever: finding new uses for the traditional technologies, thinking thin (in space's terms) and keeping the 'one of a kind' look-n-feel as well. He found an Israeli recycle textile factory, and after he got their warm blessing, he started to observe the machines, the human assets and the factory's waste. Eventually he upcycled it! He changed the function of the machines and reused the factory's textile waste: the strings. Actually it was more of left overs of strings which usually exchanged colors at their end. That's the reason they were wrong for the traditional industry, anyway, for the upcycle scene they were a treasure. Now the machines worked the other way around and made lovely cushion seats, who came from an assembly line, but if you check them closely, you can attached differently and emotionally to each and every one of them.

אחרי שסיים את לימודיו במכון הטכנולוגי בחולון במסלול העיצוב התעשייתי, החליט שהיה מתאים לו לפנות לעיצוב על קו ייצור, אך באופן חכם: למצוא שימוש חדש לטכנולוגיות מסורתיות, לחשוב רזה (במונחים של מקום) ואף, לשמור על האיכויות של מוצר יחיד ומיוחד. הוא פנה למפעל מיחזור טקסטיל ישראלי ולאחר שקיבלו אותו בזרועות פתוחות הוא החל בתצפיות. הוא צפה במכונות, בהון האנושי ובפסולת התעשיתית של המפעל. לבסוף הוא מיחדש את זה! הוא שינה את תפקוד המכונות ועשה שימוש חוזר בפסולת המפעל - החוטים. למעשה, זה היה יותר בכיוון של שאריות של חוטים שבדרך כלל בסופם היו מחליפים צבעים. זו הסיבה שהם היו פסולים לתעשייה המסורתית. בכל מקרה לסצנת המיחדוש הם היו אוצר. עכשיו שהמכונות עבדו בכיוון ההפוך, נוצרו יופי של מושבים רכים (פופים) שיצאו מפס ייצור, אך משהתקרבת אליהם יכולת לראות את השוני ובכך, להקשר באופן רגשי ושונה לכל אחד ואחד מהמושבים.

Another upcyling adventure had waited for Shir in the back yard of his workshop - A bunch of branches. It's only natural he joined them with an Eco resin cast. The fossil-look outcome, is combining once again Shir's winning ingredients, form with handicraft, a set of vases that each and every one of them has a unique look which cannot be duplicated.

I will start with a disclosure. Avishay Sasson is not the common sustainable designer I use to meet, and I had my own doubts writing this post. But, then again, I have a love affair with his two drawer chest, which he simply and cleverly upcycled from two lovely wine boxes. Whether it's their new context of design - the idea of upcycle itself, their extra accessories, or the royal typography, either way it spelled me.

Love affair {2} The lamp
For Sasson the wine connection is going a long way back from his days as a barman. He was eight years on the bar. Than one day he was asked by a good friend, to help him build a light fixture as a present for his grandmother. This love affair with this occasional lamp, send him to a carpentry course - to explore arts and crafts more thoroughly. The experience was good, but still wasn't enough for him, so he continued to industrial design studies at the H.I.T, in the Culture and Creation Department.

לאבישי הקשר עם היין מתחיל עוד מימיו כברמן בבראסרי. 8 שנים הוא היה על הבר, ויום אחד חבר טוב ביקש את עזרת ידיו המוכשרות בבנית גוף תאורה כמתנה לסבתו. הרומן עם המנורה הזו (שיצאה מאוד מוצלחת) הביא אותו לקורס נגרות של משרד העבודה. מיד לאחר מכן הוא הרגיש שזה לא מספיק והמשיך ללימודי עיצוב תעשייתי במרכז הטכנולוגי בחולון במסלול המתבקש בשבילו, תרבות ויצירה.

Love affair {3} The waste

Sasson can't be indifference to street waste. He collects and upcycle almost everything he finds. It can be wine boxes, shipping boxes, old tables and even an old stop light! This love affair with waste doesn't necessarily comes with a sustainable agenda but more like a start point of inspiration for his designs. It's the form leads function story. But it can be also that the idea in his mind leads to the material. That's the reason he found himself in addition to upcylce projects, designing new projects from new wood material (Oh dear!) for example: "Kloe" chest. In both cases he wishes to design a "one of a kind" object.

אבישי לא ממש יכול להתעלם מפסולת כשהוא עובר לידה ברחוב. הוא אוסף וממחדש כמעט כל דבר שהוא מוצא: קופסאות יין, ארגזי משלוח, שולחנות ישנים ואפילו רמזור! הרומן שלו עם פסולת לא בהכרח מגיע מאג'נדה סביבתית אלא יותר כנקודת מוצא של השראה לעיצוב שלו. הסיפור המוכר של: צורה מכתיבה את השימוש. למרות שגם קורה לו שהרעיון שיש לו בראש מכתיב את החומר. זו הסיבה שהוא מוצא את עצמו במקביל לפרוייקטים של מיחדוש עובד גם על פרוייקטים עיצוביים בהם הוא נדרש להשתמש בסוגי עץ חדש!! (אוי וויי!) למשל כמו שידת ה"קלואי". בשני המקרים הוא מבקש לעצב אובייקט שהוא יחיד מסוגו.

The colors of black

When I was a teenager I had this complete perfect image of my future woman's look - wearing only black cloths. Not a black "The Cure" printed t-shirt, but the clever Yohji (Yamamoto) kind of black (in that time I didn't really know who was he).

First time I met Elanit Neutra's bags I knew I love them for they were all black.
Elanit  is coming with the rock-blond-tall girl look, and if one's look say something about one's garbage collection, so tiers would be definitely a perfect match for her.

She studied graphic design (apparently we were overlapped for two years in Wizo Haifa Academy of Design). Than she continued to study interior design, post production and worked as a set designer. In all of that time she was always collecting tiers from the streets and "played bags" with them. Eventually this hobby became her business.

Her work shouldn't be "hash tagged" as fashion unless you consider the "timeless - must have in my wardrobe" side of it.

The tiers arrive on a special delivery from someone who actually sells this stuff. For Elanit, opening that pile of the black treasure and finding out what colors came from the black this time, is the highlight of the whole process. There is something very exciting in opening a box full of surprises, something that recreates our childhood innocent experience.

The tiers come with all kind of texture: smooth, striped, colored stripes, dense stripes. Some look like washed jeans and some have typography on them. The last kind is my favorite.

That's my own interpretation for "The colors of black"

The different variety of the original material are the reason for the "one of a kind" result.

That's the Neutra I'll buy right after I would buy an iPad.

That's the Neutra I'll have for the change from the iPad.

I like that Neutra's designs are flowing peacefully with the material and not giving in to it, that's what makes the result so quietly perfect.

I think this is the version of Neutra for the "Little Black Dress".

And that's my Neutra :-)

Neutra plays for so long with tiers, she knows exactly the way they move, so she moves on designing jewelry, furniture, baskets, planters and more to come.

And as the Yohji said: “Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy - but mysterious. But above all black says this: "I don’t bother you - don’t bother me".”
